8D – Problem solving process
Much more than just a report
The 8D method is an effective problem-solving method and can help address problems across all processes, departments and areas. Also in supporting units such as: personnel management, controlling, IT, maintenance, etc.
It is by no means the case, as popular opinion suggests, that the 8D method is just a form that the quality department uses in the event of a customer complaint.
By going through the 8 steps or disciplines of the method, comprehensive solutions can be found and, above all, a recurrence of the same or similar problems can be avoided.
Problem solving method in 8D (disciplines) / steps
- D1: Define lead and form team
- D2: Clear (crystal clear) description of the problem (5W2H, ZDF, sketches, good/bad illustrations, …)
- D3: Immediate and corrective measures A) Completion of the customer’s affected orders and B) Take hedging
- D4: Cause analysis (Ishikawa / Fishbone / Fischkreten diagram, Go to Gemba / Go to see / go to the scene, 5 Why / 5 x Why, …)
- D5: Define corrective measures
- D6: Implement corrective measures
- D7: Effectiveness control
- D8: Take preventative measures, update processes, apply what has been learned, secure what has been improved
